Why ROOTED?

Most carbon calculators are cloud-based SaaS platforms that require you to upload your energy bills, travel logs, and supplier lists to remote servers.

ROOTED is different. It runs entirely on your device.

Core Features

  • 100% Privacy: The application runs entirely on your machine (Mac/Windows/Linux). Your data never leaves your device -- not even to us.

Document Scanning

Scan your bills, receipts, and travel documents to auto-fill the emissions calculator. No manual data entry required.

  • Utility Bills: Electricity, gas, and water bills -- extracts kWh consumption, supplier, and billing period automatically.
  • Fuel Receipts: Captures litres, fuel type, and cost for Scope 1 mobile combustion.
  • Flight Tickets: Reads IATA airport codes, cabin class, and passenger count. Calculates distance automatically.
  • Train Tickets: UK CRS station codes with distance calculation using great-circle routing.
  • Ferry Tickets: Foot passenger and car passenger modes with common route lookup (20 routes including Copenhagen-Oslo, Dover-Calais).
  • Hotel Invoices: Extracts check-in/check-out dates, room count, and auto-calculates room-nights.

All scanning uses local OCR (Tesseract) and local AI parsing. Your documents are processed in memory and never stored.

ROOTED supports organisations operating across the UK and EU:

  • United Kingdom: Full support with 187+ UK DESNZ 2025 emission factors.
  • Ireland: SEAI 2025 emission factors (63 factors) covering Scope 1, 2, and 3 core categories.
  • Denmark: Grid electricity (0.09 kgCO2e/kWh), district heating with city-specific factors (Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg), waste incineration, and ferry route calculations.
  • Currency Support: GBP, EUR, and DKK with automatic conversion for spend-based calculations.

Technology

ROOTED demonstrates Jura Labs' core engineering principles:

  • Local LLMs: Uses optimised Llama 3.1 (8B parameters, 4-bit quantised) running locally via Ollama. Runs efficiently on M4 Mac with 16GB RAM minimum.
  • Hybrid RAG Pipeline: Combines dense vector search (ChromaDB) + sparse BM25 search with cross-encoder reranking for precise, cited answers.
  • Vision/OCR Pipeline: Tesseract OCR with multi-pass preprocessing and local LLM parsing. Fallback to Gemma 3 vision model. No cloud APIs.
  • Transparent Metrics: Every emission factor is cited (187+ UK DESNZ 2025 factors, 63 Ireland SEAI factors). Every calculation is visible.
  • Sustainable Code: Written in Python (FastAPI) and SvelteKit, optimised to minimise computational overhead and energy use.
  • WCAG 2.2 AA Accessible: Keyboard navigation, focus indicators, touch targets, screen reader support, and dark mode throughout.
